A Brief Biography:

Dove Booksellers is proud to announce the acquisition of the personal library of the late Ernst Badian, D. Phil. (1925-2011). This unique collection, assembled over many decades by a one of the foremost historians of ancient Rome in the second half of the twentieth century, reveals the careful and informed choices of a scholar and researcher together with the zeal of a book collector. Dr. Badian's library reflects the wide range and depth of his scholarship; along with Greek and Latin texts are to be found monographs by the thousands on all aspects of the ancient world, including archeology, inscriptions, history, literature, philosophy, historiography and methodology. Austrian-born, Ernst Badian was a professor at Harvard from 1971 to 1998. He was created a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1974; he helped found the American Journal of Ancient History, the Association of Ancient Historians, and the New England Ancient History Colloquium. The Austian ambassador to the United States awarded him that country's Cross of Honor for Arts and Sciences in 1999. The Ernst Badian Collection of Roman Republican Coins is housed by the Special Collections and University Archives of Rutgers University Libraries.
